Canada ETA Application Step-by-Step Guide

Initiating Your Application

  1. Go to the official ETA website, a page within the official website for the Government of Canada.

  • Click on the link that says “Apply online for an eTA” which I have put a red box around in the screenshot on the left of this page.

2. Make sure you read all the preparatory information as you click through the pages of information pertaining to the application process and for whom the ETA is appropriate. The “How to Apply” box is where you will finally be able to complete your application, but it’s still important to scan through the information first.

3. Once you’ve read through the important information, click the button at the bottom “Get final instructions to apply for an eTA

4. Choose the appropriate option here as per the country that issued your passport. I am applying from Australia, therefore I chose “Other Country”.

5. Choose the option the best describes your upcoming visit to Canada. Mine is for tourism purposes, therefore I chose the first option, “Visit as a tourist or family”.

6. In your application you won’t need to upload a photo of your passport, but you will need to enter information that you’ll find on your ID page. Have a quick read through the guide so you know where to locate the necessary information as you progress through your application.

7. Answer “Yes” or “No” here as per the explanation below the question.

8. Click “Next” to progress to the next page.

9. Select your passport type from the drop down menu.

If you’re at all unsure as to what type of passport you have, read the information in the screenshot picture on the left.

10. As discussed above, select your passport type from the drop down menu.

11. Select the code in the list that matches the country of your passport.

12. Choose your nationality from the drop down menu as displayed in your passport.

13. Enter your passport number as displayed in your passport.
For example, on an Australian passport, it’s location on the top right corner of the ID page, labelled as “Document No.”

14. Re-enter your passport number as written in the box above.

15. Enter your surname as displayed on your passport.

16. Enter your first name/s as displayed on your passport.

17. Select your date of birth details from the drop down menus ( Year | Month | Day ).

18. You can select your gender from the drop down menu. Options: Male / Female / Other

19. Select the county or territory where you were actually born. If you’ve been issued a passport from a different country, that’s fine, this answer does not have to be the same as your passport.

20. The same goes for this answer as mentioned above, type in the actual city / town of your birth.

21. Select the date your passport was issued from the drop down menus ( Year | Month | Day ). It will be on your ID page.

22. Select the date your passport expires from the drop down menus ( Year | Month | Day ). It will be on your ID page.

23. Select your relationship / marital status from the drop down menu

24. This is a “Yes” or “No” question.

25. If you answered “Yes” above and know the UCI of your previous visa, enter it here.

26. Re-enter the UCI of your previous visa here if you know it.

27. Select the option that best describes your current job status from the drop down menu.

28. Select the option that best describes your job title from the drop down menu.

29. The name of your employer / school would be the company name or school name.

30. Select the country where your employer / school is located from the drop down menu.

31. Type in the city or town where your employer / school is located.

32. Select what year you began your employment / schooling.

33. Choose your preferred language or language you’re most proficient in from the drop down menu.

34. Type in your email address

35. Re-type your email address, making sure the two match.

36. Type in the number or name of your home. If you live in an apartment or unit, make sure you type in your apartment/unit number separately in the box above.

37. Type in the name of the street/ road where your home is located, including the type of road. Eg. court, terrace, road, etc.

38. Type in the city or town where your home is located.

39. Select the country or territory where your home is located.

40. Type in the greater region where your home is located, such as your home state.

41. Select “Yes” or “No” from the drop down box as to whether you know when you’re travelling (arriving) to Canada.

42. Select the actual or approximate date of when you plan to travel to Canada. You can make an educated guess if you are applying before buying your plane tickets.

43. Select your flight time details using the drop down menus. Again you can make an educated guess if you are applying before buying your plane tickets.

44. Answer “Yes” or “No” using the drop down menu. If “Yes” you’ll need to supply details.

45. Answer “Yes” or “No” using the drop down menu. If “Yes” you’ll need to supply details.

46. Answer “Yes” or “No” using the drop down menu. If “Yes” you’ll need to supply details.

47. Make your selection from the drop down menu. If you have one of the conditions listed, you’ll likely need to supply additional details.

48. Read the Privacy notice above then click the box to agree to the terms. You must agree to be eligible for entry.

49. Type in your full name as it appears on your passport ID page.

50. Click “Proceed to Payment” to finalise your application.

51. Once you’re read over the summary of fees for your application, click “Transmit and Pay”.

52. Type in your payment card details like you would with any online purchase.

53. Click “Checkout” to complete your application.

As advised at the beginning, your application will be reviewed and issued, provided there are no issues or complications, fairly quickly. If it’s taking a while, you can check the status of your application from the home page as shown at the top of this page.
